Tradicionalmente ha sido habitual en Argentina la caracterización de los docentes como parte de las clases medias o de la pequeña burguesía, según la perspectiva teórica. En buena medida, esta caracterización se ha fundamentado principalmente en la composición predominantemente femenina de la docencia y en su carácter de cónyuges de aquella porción de población que ocupa “posiciones relativamente importantes en la estructura social”. Sin embargo, pocos estudios han intentado dar cuenta de dicha hipótesis y la mayoría de los que lo han intentado, se han basado en muestras no representativas. En este trabajo exponemos un ejercicio basado en la comparación de datos censales correspondientes a tres jurisdicciones que presentan rasgos diferenciados tanto en el reclutamiento de los docentes como en sus estructuras económico-sociales concretas: Ciudad de Buenos Aires, La Pampa y Santa Cruz.
