Abstract

This article analyzes the motifs of hospitality (ξενία) and love (ἔρως) in Homer’s Odyssey and their reconfiguration in Parthenius of Nicaea’s Ἐρωτικὰ Παθήματα. Through a philological and intertextual reading, it argues that hospitality, a civilizing value in Homer, is replaced by a destructive ἔρως in Parthenius. The concepts of Nachleben, citation, and hypertextuality are used to examine how Odysseus’ figure is rewritten. The paper highlights a significant ideological inversion in the Hellenistic and Roman reception of the Homeric text.
