Abstract

This article examines the function of the biographies of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob within the internal organization of the Law in Philo’s Expositio Legis. Departing from interpretations centered on their exemplary character, it investigates the patriarchs’ legal status as general, archetypal, and unwritten laws endowed with soul and reason. It argues that they mediate between the right reason of nature and written legislation: they actualize natural normativity as human virtue and precede particular ordinances as their general models. The distinction between a nomimos life and being nomos autos shows that their legal status derives from natural reason rather than from conformity to a pre-existing code.
